What Happens When You Stop Fixing Your Child and Start Trusting Them

For so many years, I believed my job as a therapist was to correct what I saw as “wrong.”
Tight muscles? Stretch them.
Uneven posture? Push it into alignment.
A movement that wasn’t available? Teach it anyway, until it looks like the “right” pattern.

But here’s what I began to notice: no matter how hard I worked, the progress didn’t stay. The tightness returned, the posture collapsed again, and the patterns never really became natural. Parents would leave my office with hope, only to come back weeks later feeling defeated.

It wasn’t because they weren’t trying. It wasn’t because they didn’t care. It was because we were approaching their child’s body from the wrong angle. We were trying to impose change from the outside, instead of trusting the incredible mechanisms already inside their child’s body.

When I discovered the power of fascia therapy, everything shifted. Fascia is the body’s connective web — the living fabric that holds, supports, and organizes everything within us. I explain it in more detail here for those who want to dive deeper, but what I want you to know is this: fascia is the key to balance and movement. And when we respect it, it teaches us something profound.

A tight muscle, for example, isn’t the enemy. It’s the hero. It’s working overtime to give your child the best balance possible with the structure they have. Forcing it to release, stretching it past its limit, or trying to make the body perform patterns it’s not ready for can actually make things worse.

But when we stop fighting against the body and instead support it, when we give it small, gentle inputs that help fascia reorganize, something beautiful happens: the child begins to find alignment from within. Movements become available not because they were drilled or imposed, but because the body was ready for them.

I’ve seen this transformation in family after family. Parents who once felt powerless, running from appointment to appointment, discover that with simple daily routines at home, their child starts to sit taller, move with more ease, and even sleep more peacefully.

I’ve seen children who couldn’t hold themselves in a shopping cart now sit upright and enjoy the ride. I’ve seen scoliosis soften, breathing become freer, digestion improve, and spasticity ease — not because we fixed these things, but because we trusted the body’s own capacity to heal and reorganize.

This shift is more than therapy. It’s a new way of seeing your child.

Fixing is heavy. It keeps you focused on what’s missing, what’s broken, what needs correction. It leaves you worried about the future, wondering if things will only get worse.

Trusting is light. It helps you see your child’s body not as a problem, but as a system already doing its best — a system that can grow stronger with the right kind of support. Trusting means believing that as your child grows, they can get better, not worse.

So here’s my invitation to you:

What if you stopped trying to fix your child?
What if you began to trust them — their body, their inner mechanisms, their ability to thrive?

This is what we teach parents inside TheraParent: how to stop fighting against their child’s body and instead join forces with it. It’s not about stretching or forcing. It’s about small, gentle steps that tap into what is already there.

When you make this shift, you’ll not only see your child differently.
You’ll see yourself differently too.

Because you are not the fixer.
You are the guide.
And together with your child, you can walk a path of trust that leads to hope, progress, and freedom.
