The Power of Intention: A Story from Inside TheraParent

Every week, we gather inside TheraParent for our live coaching call. Families from around the world — different accents, different routines, different diagnoses — but somehow, all asking the same quiet question: Am I doing enough?

Sometimes the call is technical. We go through exercises, adjust hand positions, and troubleshoot videos. But other times — and these are the moments we hold onto — something else happens. Something you can’t plan for. A pause. A breath. A shift.

This week, we had one of those moments.

Toward the end of the call, Eileen — a grandmother who’s been working with her granddaughter for many months — unmuted herself and shared a reflection that stopped us in our tracks.

“When I started,” she said, “I was always exhausted at the end of it. I’d have crick in my back and my neck. I was thinking, I have to do it this way. I have to fix her.

Her honesty landed softly — because every parent in that space knew that feeling. The weight of effort. The ache of trying so hard. The quiet pressure to get it all right.

She told us that one day, a wise woman in her life asked her a simple question:

“Isn’t she part of this too?”

And that changed everything.

Eileen continued, “I just started relaxing. Doing it differently. Letting go of the pressure. And now… she makes little noises when I hit the right tension. She lets me know. It’s become this flow between the two of us.”

She smiled — you could hear it in her voice.

“It’s not exhausting anymore. It’s exhilarating.”

That one word stayed with me.

Exhilarating.

Not because the technique changed. Not because she added something new. But because she set down the weight she didn’t need to carry. She stopped performing the therapy, and started being in it. With her granddaughter. Present. Listening. Following, not just leading.

That’s the difference intention makes.

Fascia responds to presence. It opens when it feels safe. It reorganizes when it feels supported, not corrected. And the person who offers that support — whether a parent, grandparent, sibling — has to feel it too.

You can’t bring softness if you’re holding tension inside.

You can’t offer safety if you’re stuck in fear.

So we return, again and again, to this gentle starting point:

What is my intention?

Not what’s the right technique. Not how many reps.
But what is the feeling I’m bringing into this moment?

Because that’s where the real work begins.
And that’s what makes it, as Eileen said, not exhausting… but exhilarating.
